Where Training is Always "Done Right"
At EagleLake Consultants, Inc., we have one and only one focus: To give students the very best learning experience possible by focusing on the learning objectives of the students and their employers. We do that by avoiding all the possible mistakes made by training companies and trainers who do far less than that. To be brief, we will focus on three critical elements of effective training.
Training Done Wrong
Some training companies actually try to find instructors who offer free training materials. They will say things like "Just teach from your notes – we will copy them for you." Others decide to use the cheapest courseware available or the first courseware they find. There is no concern about the quality of the courseware or that the instructor has ever even seen it before. Sometimes, they will give the instructor a couple of weeks to "look over" the materials. Often, however, the instructor gets the material with absolutely no time to prepare.
In addition, most commercially available courseware is created by companies that don't spend a lot of time (if any) actually teaching the materials. The materials may have dozens of typos and technical errors, but these are never corrected because the instructors have no incentive to write up a 10-20 page list of corrections and suggestions after the course.
Further, the commands shown in most manuals are usually just typed in and often contain errors. For these reasons, most commercially available courseware is mediocre at best.
In addition, some training companies are going to electronic manuals. Often these are delivered in a way that makes them unavailable after the class.
Training Done Right!
At EagleLake, we write 98% of the courseware we teach from and hand select the other 2%. Every major command in our manuals is supported with screenshots to prove that it works. If improvements to our courseware are identified, they are made before the next lass is taught. Instructors are totally comfortable with the materials because in most cases, they either wrote them or have taught from them numerous times. We are confident that our courseware is absolutely the best in the business. And to be clear, students always receive high quality printed manuals.
Training Done Wrong
A question often asked of prospective trainers by training companies is "Can you teach XYZ subject?" The question should be, "Do you have the experience and skills to teach the subject effectively?" Instructors often will take assignments for which they are totally unprepared because they think they can "bone up" on something in which they have no competence. Students can usually sense that. Further, the goal of most instructors is just to "teach the material".
Training Done Right!
At EagleLake, we choose only the best instructors available. That choice is made based on their certifications, their teaching experience and evaluations from courses they have taught before. We set the highest standards for our instructors because the students deserve no less than that.
The focus of EagleLake instructors always is to give students what they need, not just what is covered in the courseware. For this reason, our instructors are told to go beyond what is in the book to give the students what they need in the time available. By talking with the students or their representatives in the process early and at the start of each class, this is assured.
The Class Environment
Training Done Wrong!
Many training companies don't care about students. Here are two areas in which this shows up in the classroom:
1. Conducting classes in a conference room. Often this is done with a table only big enough for chairs for the students. There is no room for computers, manuals, notepads, etc.
2. Often the attempt is made to do virtual classes at the same time as a live class. The instructor can only do one of these well because they are incompatible. Students suffer.
Training Done Right!
We work with our clients to make sure they have the best possible environment for learning. If absolutely required, we will allow virtual students in our classes. However, our clients and the students must fully understand that the total focus of the class is on the live students.
